MADD Wayne County Asks The Public “To Tie One On For Safety” In Support Of Law Enforcement And      MADD’s Campaign To Eliminate Drunk Driving

Who Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Wayne County will host the annual “Tie One On For Safety” campaign in support of the one-year anniversary of the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.  Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans, Mayor William Wild of Westland and Dr. Prince Miles, MADD Wayne County Chaplin and victim who lost his son in a drunk driving crash has confirmed their attendance.  These dignitaries will spread the message to encourage the community to Celebrate Safe and Sober during the holiday season.  Detroit School of the Arts (DSA), Achievers Ladies Ensemble will sing holiday carols during the event.

What:  MADD Wayne County will host a news conference to kick-off a countywide drunk driving crackdown to keep our streets safe at this historically dangerous period, through New Year’s.  MADD Wayne County is working with law enforcement to send the message:  if you drive at or over the legal limit, you will be under arrest.  As a part of our annual “Tie One On For Safety”, MADD is asking the public to tie a MADD red ribbon or display a red ribbon decal to their vehicles in support of law enforcement and the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, which celebrated its one-year anniversary this past November.

The news conference will include a Celebrate Safe and Sober Holiday Mocktail Mixer, sponsored by MADD Wayne County, Westland Shopping Center and Westland Shopping Center merchants, featuring alcohol-free drinks created and submitted by the community and served by “celebrity servers” at the conclusion.  Westland Shopping Center gift certificates will be awarded to the top three contestants selected by the public at the event.

When:  Friday, December 7, 2007 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Where:  Westland Shopping Center, 35000 West Warren Road, Westland, MI  48185 (Macy’s Court)

Why: The holidays are among the deadliest times on the roads. American families will be sharing the roads this holiday season with more than an estimated 2.8 million convicted drunk drivers with three or more convictions and of those, more than 600,000 have five or more convictions.  According to Office of Highway Safety Planning, there were 332 drunk driving fatalities in Michigan in 2006, which was a 1.5% increase from 2005.

MADD’s Tie One On for Safety Campaign, urges motorists to tie a MADD ribbon or display a ribbon decal to a visible location on their vehicles as a pledge to drive safe and sober and wear seat belts, and it reminds others to do the same.  For more information on Tie One On For Safety and the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving,                 visit www.madd.org.
